How to Prepare Siblings for a Smooth & Connected Family Photo Experience

As a parent, you already know that getting kids to smile at the same time—without wrestling, poking, or dramatic sighing—is a feat in itself. Now throw in the pressure of family photo day, and it's easy to worry that sibling dynamics might derail the session. I am a mom of three, all of whom are utterly over me and my camera, I get the struggle to my core.

But here's the good news: with a little preparation (and the right photographer 👋), your children's natural connection can shine through—giving you the kind of images you'll treasure for years.

Here are some tried-and-true ways to help siblings feel confident, connected, and cooperative during your family photo session:

1. Let Each Child Know What to Expect

Before photo day, talk about what’s going to happen. Explain that it’s not just about posing—it’s about playing, snuggling, and laughing as a family. Knowing what’s coming helps kids of all ages feel safe and excited.

Try saying:

"We’re going to have fun with Ms. Angela—she’ll take pictures while we play games together as a family."

2. Give Older Siblings a “Helper” Role

Older kids love feeling included in grown-up tasks. Give them a job, like helping a younger sibling smile or holding their hand for certain shots. It builds connection and boosts confidence.

Bonus: It naturally creates candid moments of affection between siblings.

3. Bring a Small Comfort Item (But Keep It Subtle!)

If your younger child has a favorite stuffed animal or lovey, bring it! Sometimes just holding it between shots or sneaking it into a snuggle pose can make all the difference. I’ll work around it or even include it becauseit tells the story of who they are right now.

4. Embrace Movement and Play

Kids love to move—and that’s a good thing! We’ll include games, running, tickles, and other playful moments to keep energy positive and photos authentic. Don’t worry about “perfect” smiles. I’m watching for real connection: belly laughs, hand squeezes, and glances only siblings share.

5. Take Breaks When Needed

Sessions with multiple kids are built with flexibility. If a little one needs a breather or a snack, we pivot. Sometimes the sweetest moments come after a short pause to reset. We all need a break sometimes to reset and kids are no different. He or she is in a new situation and despite our best attempts to prepare them, it can be scary for them. We will be patient and it really is okay. I am VERY used to kids and their feelings, as I have a deeply feeling kid.

6. Let Go of Perfection

If this isn't the pot calling the kettle black. This is my biggest struggle in parenthood. It’s tempting to hope for the picture-perfect smile from every child, in every shot—but the magic happens in between. A sideways hug, a tousled curl, a big sister's protective glance—those are the real moments you'll treasure.
